The Surreal in Indian Painting: Select Works from the Arturo Schwarz and other Private Collections, Prahlad Bubbar Ltd, 33 Cork Street, London W1, until 15th November.
Arturo Schwarz is well-known for his works on Surrealism and Dada, indeed it has become a philosophy of life for him, but he is also very much interested in tribal, prehistoric and Asian Art, Tantra and Kabbalah. Inspired by his visit to India in the 1960s he started collecting Indian paintings and sculpture. Half of the twenty-four paintings (17th-19th Century) in this exhibition were originally in his collection.
Prahlad Bubbar and Schwarz met in 2007 and this exhibition reflects their shared taste for the Surreal since in Indian Art there is very often an esoteric mixture of myth, fantasy and the mystical.
