A FETE WORSE THAN DEATH 2014 – 20th anniversary exhibition and fete – Saturday 19th July
Where:
Rivington Street, EC2A: midday – 8pm
Red Gallery & Red Market: midday – midnight
This promises to be fun as the western half of Rivington Street will be transformed into a village fete with emerging and established artists bringing their own individual contributions to this special event which marks the 20th anniversary of the last A Fete Worse than Death in 1994 which helped transform Hoxton and Shoreditch as a cultural landscape.
The first A Fete Worse than Death was organised by Joshua Compston, director of Factual Nonsense gallery in the summer of 1993. Some artists, including Gavin Turk, Gillian Wearing, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas and Gary Hume actually manned stalls and provided entertainment. The following year Compston held the second fete which attracted four thousand visitors to the area.
The twentieth anniversary fete is being organised by the Red Gallery who are generously allowing artists to reclaim the area for a day allowing visitors a rare chance to see and buy early artworks made by the YBA’s before they became famous but perhaps even more importantly there will be a contemporary art exhibition of emerging and established artists connected to the area over the past 20 years as well as original memorabilia from the Fete & Factual Nonsense gallery (sold in aid of the Joshua Compston memorial fund and assisting in raising money for a memorial to be erected in Hoxton Square).
