Sophie Dickens – New Exhibition, Sladmore Contemporary, 32 Bruton Place, Mayfair, London, W1, until 24th October

Monkey 1 (seated). Bronze, Edition of 3. 36” x 48”
Monkey 2 (standing looking down). Bronze, Edition of 3. 51” x 42”
Sophie Dickens is the great-great granddaughter of Charles Dickens and it is perhaps his skilful delineations of scenes and characters that somehow have passed on down to her. She certainly has imagination as the climbing bronze monkeys on the gallery’s front and the rats that scamper around inside indicate.
As well as her depictions of animals her human cart-wheeling figures and weightlifters are also popular with collectors at home and abroad. The works have a verve and wit, alongside an understanding of the subject matter which makes them immediately appealing.
