Luke Martineau – Across the Water, Panter & Hall, 11-12 Pall Mall, London, SW1, until 24th October 2014
Take elements of the eastern seaboard of the United States and combine them with views of the Thames in London, Exmoor rivers and North Devon beaches and you will understand why this new show of pictures by the talented artist Luke Martineau is called Across the Water. There are street and flower studies as well to tempt you.
Many of his scenes start en plein air and are then further developed in the studio. The appeal of his work is perhaps best summed up by what the novelist Joanna Trollope wrote in her introduction to the catalogue: “These are paintings to live with. Luke’s skill with light, and light on water, and his eloquent impressionistic rendering of figures, as well as his remarkable ability to define landscapes and townscapes, make him as accessible as he is distinguished. To find a contemporary painter of this versatility and humanity is rare indeed, and if you don’t own one already, I warmly suggest that you should start.”
