This exciting exhibition is spread over two galleries Beetles + Huxley and Osborne Samuel. It is a new departure for the latter as they are well known for Modern British Art but in the words of Peter Osborne “Photography is simply another medium for great art, to add to painting, prints and sculpture for which we are well known. However we break new ground with the current exhibition, which includes rare iconic images by some of the best known photographers of all time, from the dawn of photography to the present day.”
And indeed they do with over one hundred and fifty photographs spread over the two galleries. Among the highlights are rare exploration photographs by Herbert Ponting and NASA photographs from space missions. Important mid- 20th century French photographers are represented, including Brassai and Henri Cartier-Bresson as are works by contemporary exponents such as Ruud van Empel, Nadav Kander and Mona Kuhn. The American street photographer Vivian Maier, who as a nanny was able to record urban life in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles can for the first-time be seen herself in a series of self-portraits.
I highly recommend this exhibition as it is a real celebration of this art form!
