David Williams-Ellis – Elemental, Portland Gallery, 8 Bennet Street (off Arlington Street), London SW1, until 23rd December 2014
This is this popular sculptor’s first solo exhibition for twelve years but I think you will agree it was worth the wait.
Living in the north of England and overlooking the Pennines he is fascinated by how the ever-changing weather affects the human figure. His new “Umbrella Girls” are an expression of that interest as are bronzes entitled Squall, Windswept and Eclipse.
His bronzes, some of which are redolent of earlier periods, have great fluidity and sense of movement which is very engaging on the eye as is his masterful use of coloured patination in some cases.
