FAIZA BUTT – SYMMETRICAL, ROSSI & ROSSI, 27 DOVER STREET, LONDON W1, until 17th JANUARY 2015
Now in its smart new premises in Dover Street Rossi & Rossi hosts the Symmetrical featuring new works by the contemporary Pakistani artist Faiza Butt
They are complex works and portraits that examine our sense of mortality and even more importantly our strong will to survive. The artist’s inspiration for these works is the violence and brutality of this year’s Israel-Gaza conflict.
Butt uses news media facial images, often of children, as the starting point for her drawings, building them up to act as a chart to relate the story she seeks to convey be it trauma, a cultural reference, or the ridiculousness of such senseless destruction.
It is a remarkable and thought-provoking body of work.
