There is still a chance to go and see this fascinating exhibition of photographs from the 60s and 70s by Flemish street photographer Herman Selleslags.

His subjects were often leading stars of music, sport and screen, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Tippi Hedren and of course Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg.

This very special exhibition opens in Frieze Week and closes at the end of Asian Art in London Week.  The artist Liu Dan (b.1953) is a contemporary master in the highly regarded Chinese art form – the traditional school of ink painting. These ten works, which have taken him four years to create, represent a new departure for him and are inspired by his great interest in Renaissance European drawings.

Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael (Urbino 1483-1520 Rome) Saint Benedict receiving Maurus and Placidus black and red chalk, pen and brown ink, brown and grey wash, squared in black chalk, partially indented with stylus, an added section of paper at the left of the sheet 14½ x 16¼ in. The exhibition will feature Raphael’s drawing Saint Benedict Receiving Maurus and Placidus as it was the inspiration for the artist’s large-scale work Redefining Pleats of Matter (縐褶被重新確定).  There are also six works depicting scholar’s rocks, the stones that were highly prized by Chinese scholars, officials and connoisseurs for more than a thousand years.

On the question of difference between him and the Old Masters Liu Dan has observed: ‘I don’t think there is any difference except that they are dead and I am still alive. On the other hand, because I’m still alive, they are alive too. I don’t advocate the literati ideology, but I endorse the literati spirit. I don’t belong to a particular tradition either. I just want to keep up the artistic tradition where freedom is unrestrained.’

Sir Norman Rosenthal has curated a new section entitled Collections and says of it: ‘Each of these eight presentations by individual dealers, spanning millennia, contain within them germs of ideas for exhibitions that could easily take place at any of the great public institutions in the world. This section will show that it is still possible, with both knowledge and love, to put together outstanding collections of art that demonstrate the highest level of creativity in all different periods of history.’

It promises to be, as usual, a great fair with much to tempt visitors, a fact confirmed by the Fair’s director Victoria Sidwell who says of it: ‘The great response to the redesigned Frieze London last year has attracted an exceptional list of galleries for 2015 and I am thrilled to announce what I believe will be a really strong fair. Once again, both established and young galleries are planning special presentations of mainly new work so Frieze London will be a place to see art of the highest quality and discover emerging artists from all over the world.’

This new show features the work of the ground-breaking artist Judy Chicago.  She has arguably set the agenda for women artists both as an activist and through her writing and art. She helped bring the perspective of women’s’ art to the foreground and her influence continues to this day.  Some of her Car Hood sculptures are part of Tate Modern’s current “The World Goes Pop” exhibition.

This main theme of Kudo’s work is a sense of disillusionment with the modern world. It is clearly reflected in these works which were created in the first ten years (1963-72) he spent in Paris.  The major piece, shown alongside works from his dome and cube series, is ‘Garden of the Metamorphosis in the Space Capsule’ (1968).

This exhibition, which has been three years in the making, contains paintings where elements of portrait, landscape and still life are brought together.  Smith writes of her work: ‘Difficulties in identifying and separating out phenomena aren’t artificially simplified but embraced in all their complexities. Thresholds are hard to determine; clouds in the sky are indistinguishable from the scum washed up with the surf’.

This marvellous exhibition elegantly shows how Seurat has been a major influence in Bridget Riley’s artistic output.

Fascinated by Seurat’s Bridge at Courbevoie at the Courtauld.  She copied it in 1959, not directly from the painting itself as she though it would be too intimidating but from an illustration of it in R H Wilenski’s book on Seurat.  Her version which normally hangs in her studio now hangs close by to the original in this show. The other paintings show how her distinctive style developed from her move to the abstract black and white pictures and then on to her famous stripe paintings where her use of coloured stripes broke new ground just as Seurat’s use of dots of colour had done in his time. Throughout her work there is reference to the tonal qualities and light found in Seurat.

Combine the showroom interiors and fabrics of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler with the vision of the Japanese-born ceramicist Hitomi Hosono and the result is perfection.  One can easily understand why her works are in museum collections, including the British Museum and the V&A.

She says of this exhibition: “I enjoyed time spent in the Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler town house. The sumptuous interiors populated by an incredibly diverse collection of antiques and works of art were fascinating. I found myself drawn particularly towards objects with a history of trade and the Far East. In this magnificent English house a sense of cross-cultural spirit has flourished. One Colefax and Fowler fabric pattern which caught my eye featured beautiful roses and pansies, which appeared to be moving as if blown by a gentle summer breeze. The softness and delicacy of rose petals is something that I wish to communicate in my own work and has led me to explore new forms and ways of aligning sweeping porcelain petal elements along a curve, emanating from multiple dense centres.”

Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler’s design director, Philip Hooper commented: “Hitomi’s work represents all I admire in contemporary ceramics. The craftsmanship, patience, vision and technical skill involved in creating these fragile pieces is almost beyond comprehension. I am thrilled that she has found so much inspiration in 39 Brook Street and that it has been a catalyst in helping her to create many new pieces that will be on show for the first time”.
