Those fans of the series Poldark and Victoria on television will no doubt find antiques and furnishings to achieve a similar period look at home while those who favour Scandinavian style will find inspiration in the special exhibition Scandi Days & Nordic Nights.

Special visitors to this edition of the Fair are a group of dealer’s from the well-known Alfies Antique Market in Church Street, London NW8.  Alfies are celebrating a well-deserved fortieth anniversary this year and this special Alfies Marylebone Stand on the Fair’s mezzanine floor is part of the celebrations.  I sincerely hope that they will become a regular feature.

1970s Italian Art

These two exhibitions of Italian art from the 1970s allows us to learn more about this period and see the similarities and differences in the approach of each group of artists.

This is the first exhibition in this country of works by the artists who formed the group Pittura Analitica in the 1970s. By concentrating on extending the possibilities of expressing the medium by using things such as elastic bands, paint rollers, cement and weaving they sought to bring a new definition to painting which reflected the times they lived in. It was a new language that both looked at what it meant to paint and acted as a contemporary communicator.

Among the artists featured are Carlo Battaglia, Enzo Cacciola, Vincenzo Cecchini, Paolo Cotani, Marco Gastini, Giorgio Griffa, Riccardo Guarneri, Elio Marchegiani, Paolo Masi, Carmengloria Morales, Claudio Olivieri, Pino Pinelli, Claudio Verna and Gianfranco Zappettini.

This, too, is another first showing of works by this small group of painters in the UK. It reveals a relatively unknown moment in 1970s Italian art when a group of six painters in Northern Italy came together to respond to contemporary culture and issued a ‘Manifesto of Objective Abstraction’ in their own individual manner. Colour was the cornerstone of their aesthetic and their works recalled some of the early 20th century movements such as Bauhaus while incorporating the ideas of the ‘concrete’ painters and others.

The artists included Mauro Cappelletti (b.1948), Diego Mazzonelli (1943-2014), Gianni Pellegrini (b.1953), Aldo Schmid (1935-78), Luigi Senesi (1938-78) and Giuseppe Wenter Marini (1944-2015). The early deaths of two of the group’s key members led to it’s decline but it remains an important part of the story of abstact painting in Italy.

The Art & Antiques Fair, Olympia London, Hammersmith Road, London W14, 27th June – 3rd July 2016

Opening Day, June 2015

Opening Day, June 2015

This Fair certainly has staying power as it is in its 44th year and continues to draw visitors in from home and abroad to see what the hundred and sixty participating dealers have to offer for their collections and homes.

The Fair’s Director, Mary Claire Boyd sums it up: “The Art & Antiques Fair, Olympia is London’s original, quintessential art and antiques fair. Over four decades since the event was founded, we continue to pride ourselves on offering a wider choice of high quality, vetted art, antiques, furniture and collectibles than any other event in the capital.”

The well-known SOFA CHICAGO – a Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design Fair (SOFA) will have a European version at this Fair as Mary Claire Boyd, explains“We are very excited to introduce SOFA LONDON as part of The Art & Antiques Fair, Olympia for the very first time this June. SOFA is widely known in the US for its international dealers selling one-of- a-kind masterpieces. Here in London we have an elite selection of dealers who will be showcasing original works from different artists and makers using a variety of mediums. For sale will be works of art including ceramics, metal work, photography, glass works, textiles, furniture and sculptures that appear more contemporary and cutting edge than other pieces in the fair, but yet will also stand the test of time. SOFA CHICAGO attracts over 35,000 people but for those who aren’t able to cross the pond to attend we’re delighted to offer this opportunity within the UK.”

Opening Day, June 2015

Opening Day, June 2015

According to recent research there is a resurgence in the demand for antiques and again I will share Mary Claire Boyd’s observations on this: “The world of antiques can be intimidating at first glance but this research shows that there is a real thirst for antiques. They are appreciated for the qualities they can bring to people’s homes– particularly amongst the younger generation who are frustrated with spending money on furnishings that only last a few years.

“While people see great benefits of purchasing antiques often they don’t realise the options and scope available to them – and the affordability.  Antiques are unique, often come with a fascinating story – and add individuality to your home.  They can also be combined very effectively with contemporary art and furniture.”

There is a wide array of objects to delight the eye and one can quite easily understand why serious collectors, museums and interior decorators return year after year.  One well-loved feature of this fair is the lecture series which includes ‘Face to Face: Dame Rosalind Savill in conversation with Richard, 10th Duke of Buccleuch and 12th Duke of Queensberry’ on 27th June.

A hundred plus galleries and work from more than a thousand artists should mean that most visitors whether established or first timers should find something to grace their homes. Not surprisingly given the recent official 90th birthday celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen there will be works with a royal flavour.

This exhibition of new portraits and landscape paintings is well worth seeing.  Her portraits are frank and also revealing of the sitter’s inner persona but handled with great understanding. Her landscapes are a personal interpretation of the countryside along the border between England and Wales and like her portraits there is a personal resonance in them.  The artist describes her process as “grabbing hold” and “pinning down” the essence and colour of the place.

This is a heady celebration of the Italian Pop Art movement which came to the fore in the early 1960s.  The gallery’s director, Ursula Casamonti, sums it up saying “We wanted to provide a counterpoint to Italian post-war abstraction and the Milanese avant-garde that we typically show at Tornabuoni Art and present a different side to the Italian 1960s, one driven by Rome and by the people’s relationship to Italian culture and the ‘Dolce Vita’.”

The artists included in this striking show are: Valerio Adami, Franco Angeli, Mario Ceroli, Tano Festa, Giosetta Fioroni, Mimmo Rotella, Mario Schifano and Cesare Tacchi
