This truly is a book that celebrates the idea of maps for it looks at them in many contexts whether real or imagined such as Columbus’s line drawing of the coast of the New World or Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island map. There are also maps by contemporary artists, including Grayson Perry and Ai Weiwei.

The maps are arranged in specially curated pairings of common themes which may be complementary or contrasting.  It adds to the excitement and draws you in to look closely at them.  For example a recent digital map of Africa, using mobile phone data, to predict the spread of Ebola is foiled by an 1854 map of London by John Snow that shows the spread of cholera.

Sir Norman Rosenthal has curated a new section entitled Collections and says of it: ‘Each of these eight presentations by individual dealers, spanning millennia, contain within them germs of ideas for exhibitions that could easily take place at any of the great public institutions in the world. This section will show that it is still possible, with both knowledge and love, to put together outstanding collections of art that demonstrate the highest level of creativity in all different periods of history.’

This very special celebration of art in Mayfair and St James’s is in its third year and attracts people from around the world. Last year more than forty international museums sent representatives to visit the many treasures – paintings, drawings, sculpture and works of art – on view. As the selection of images here shows this year promises to be as good if not better.

The Crown Estate, who own about half of St James’s, are sponsoring the event. Their Head of the St James’s Portfolio, James Cooksey said: “The Crown Estate is delighted to support this important event in London’s art calendar which unites the art galleries of Mayfair and St. James’s, and helps to promote the extraordinary range of knowledge, expertise and heritage on offer in the art market’s historic home.”

There is little doubt that Masterpiece London is a very special fair with objects spanning over 4, 000 years being shown by some 150 galleries. It is a magnet for both collectors and museums round the world and a place to see some outstanding treasures.

As its Chief Executive Nazy Vassegh explains, “The 8 days when Masterpiece takes place is the epicentre of the art season in London. After just five years Masterpiece is now firmly regarded as both a leading international art fair and a welcome addition to the summer season in London. We are particularly delighted by the exhibitors and partners that will join us for the 2015 edition.”

I do hope that many of you will be able to visit this exciting Fair and over the coming days I shall share some of the objects you may find there.

The news of the discovery of one of Sir John Franklin’s lost ships (HMS Erebus) last year in the words of Philip Hatfield, the chief curator of this show, ‘has reminded us of the pull the Arctic has on our imagination. For centuries explorers have searched for routes through and resources in the Arctic, and while men like Frobisher sought gold today’s searches are for black gold. Lines in the Ice looks at this long history of exploration, the threads that link it together and the reasons we are still interested in the Arctic today.’

Indeed the show makes the point well, concentrating on the three leading Arctic explorers who sought to find the legendary Northwest Passage – Martin Frobisher, Sir John Franklin and Roald Amundsen. The exhibition uses items and objects, some of which are quirky, from Europe, Canada and the Arctic to give a good idea of life there.

I am sure that many of you have fond memories of helping to decorate the Christmas Tree at home each year, unwrapping the familiar decorations for their annual outing and perhaps tracing the history of some of them – my parents had some vintage tree decorations which had survived their many moves and reflected a part of their story. Here is a small selection of decorations that may appeal, either to be bought and treasured or given as gifts.

Some galleries mark this period with exhibitions of stock with an emphasis on the idea of them being appropriate as gifts, a fact reflected in their price range, and indeed such an item may well set the recipient off into the exciting world of collecting. Antiquities specialist Rupert Wace for example has a range of finds, including bronze Roman animal brooches while Sladmore Contemporary has suitable works by their gallery artists.

Da Vinci is a rather good link to tell you about Christmas at Windsor Castle where the State Rooms have been beautifully decorated for Christmas as this picture showing the State Dining Room proves. I am sure you need no further prompting from me to go and enjoy the wonderful artistic treasures housed within the Castle.

A trip to Kew Gardens is always a great delight and you may find their special Christmas at Kew evening openings fun. You are guided along the mile-long route by snowflakes and as you progress along you will encounter botanically inspired, large scale light installations that look like fireworks frozen in time, including luminous lilies of the valley and imposing thistles. They are the work of the French design studio TILT. It is a magical experience for young and old and you will also get to meet Father Christmas!

Mary Clare Boyd, the Fair’s Director, says, ‘be prepared for a truly eclectic mix of pieces for sale, beyond what you might imagine an antique fair could sell. There are fashion drawings, 1950s Cartier earrings, Asprey Cocktail shakers, Warhol prints, Lalique glass, 18th century oak dressers, enormous chrome binoculars and 17th century marriage portraits. It is a wonderful source of one-off Christmas presents at different prices and the experience is one of pre-Christmas luxury and sparkle with a host of experts on hand to learn from’.
