A history of cricketing cartoons is a fitting way to mark the English Ashes victory and the final Test Match at the Oval.  It is worth remembering that ten percent of all sales achieved will go to Tim Rice’s cricket charity ‘A Chance to Shine’.

The influence of her tutors at Edinburgh College of Art, which included Elizabeth Blackadder, can be easily discerned in these colourful, accomplished works. Like many of her Scottish predecessors she is influenced by French artists such as Matisse and Bonnard and as you can see the resulting watercolours and oils introduce us to a vibrant inviting world.

Seaside Humour

Donald McGill, Chris Beetles Gallery, 8 & 10 Ryder St, St James’s, London SW1

'I'VE GOT THE SACK FROM THE 'BUS DEPOT!' 'WHATEVER FOR?' 'I LET A MAN GO TOO FAR FOR TWOPENCE!!!'

‘I’VE GOT THE SACK FROM THE ‘BUS DEPOT!’
‘WHATEVER FOR?’
‘I LET A MAN GO TOO FAR FOR TWOPENCE!!!’

It is somewhat strange in our age to think that in 1954 cartoonist Donald McGill and his publisher were prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act for those delightful, saucy seaside postcards adorned with revealing costumes, bulging bodies and of course the double-entendres and innuendo that accompanied the images. Many of the postcards in 1954 were destroyed but as so often in history you cannot destroy a good thing and the images have lived on, still popular in the national psyche.

I’M ASTONISHING THE NATIVES HERE

This fun show features over a hundred works from the McGill Museum and Archive which has sadly had to close, a tale told in the accompanying catalogue. The gallery is also launching Bernard Crossley’s Donald McGill: Postcard Artist, the first comprehensive biography on this extraordinary artist

I must also briefly mention the original artwork of Peter MacKarell used in an anthology of poems about antiques. Called ‘GOING FOR A SONG’, it has been compiled and introduced by Bevis Hillier.

The new show ‘The Long Nineteenth Century’ fills all the gallery space and provides a dazzling journey through British Art from 1789 to 1918.  The exhibition is divided into different areas that reflect changes in fashion and society during this period.  These areas include The Experimental Drive in Watercolour, Victorian Landscapes Abroad, Victorian Figures: from Page to Wall, Aestheticism and The First World War among others.

Just as the subject matter varies so does the media in which they are executed – oils, watercolours, photographs, drawings and of course book illustrations and cartoons, number among them.  Artists whose work is displayed include Gillray, Beardsley, Rackham, and Heath Robinson as well as Varley, Roberts, Allingham and Goodwin.  The exhibition is accompanied by a two volume catalogue which I heartily recommend as I do this show!
