This year’s fair opens slightly ahead of Asian Art in London but there is still some overlap.  The fair’s events programme is quite lively with a variety of talks (some of which are in conjunction with the V&A) including among the subjects Art Deco travel, historic wallpapers, Chinese sculpture, Pre-Raphaelite Drawings and the BBC Roadshow expert Alastair Dickenson will show how to identify the authenticity of a piece of silver.  In addition the art consultant Vanessa Curry will conduct highlight tours round the fair. As always all objects are vetted by experts before the fair so you can buy with confidence.  Good hunting!

Ancient Greek Jewellery

The word Amaranthine is appropriate for this rather special exhibition as it is derived from Ancient Greek and means beautiful, unfading, words that can be readily applied to these pieces of Greek jewellery which date from the 4th and 3rd Centuries BC.

The solid gold Lion-head bracelets remind us that Lion emblems were a symbol of rank and status for both men and women.  The Hellenistic gold, garnet and agate necklace and earrings would most likely have been a very clear sign of the wearer’s position and wealth although sometimes such pieces were used as an offering to the gods.  The Herakles Knot that adorns the gold armlet was associated with marriage and may be the original source for the phrase ‘tying the knot’.

The gallery’s director Dr Glenn Lacki sums it up saying “These pieces intrigue the mind as well as they once adorned the body. Jewellery has deep-rooted connections to social ritual – connections that cut across time and cultures. The pieces we are bringing together for Amaranthine are heavy in gold, but carry also their own extraordinary histories that entice our imaginations.”

John Donald

Goldsmiths’ Fair II, Goldsmiths’ Hall, Foster Lane, London EC2, 22nd September – 4th October 2015

Book Cover John Donald

The jewellery of noted designer-maker John Donald (a Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company) is the subject of a special exhibition at the Fair and it coincides with the October publication of his autobiography Precious Statements (McNidder & Grace).  Some twenty-four of his innovative designs, dating between 1958 and 2002, will be on show.

HRH Princess Margaret was one of his patrons, no doubt attracted by his use of textured gold and silver for his sculptural forms.  His use of uncut stones was another of his successful ideas as it allowed the natural qualities of the stones to come to the fore.

The Queen’s Gallery – II

There is still time to see the two fascinating shows at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London SW1, until 22nd February 2015. Here is the second one.

Gold

This is perhaps an appropriate subject for an exhibition held in a royal palace especially as gold has been regarded as a symbol of status, whether temporal or ecclesiastical, in most cultures across the millennia. You will encounter the Bronze Age Rillaton gold cup, a pre-Inca gold crown from Ecuador and a tiger’s head from the throne of the Indian ruler Tipu Sultan (1785–93) and objects associated with the coronation of British monarchs.

Gold has been used in many ways as these items from the Royal Collection confirm; gold boxes, fans, plate and ornaments, paintings, books, illuminated manuscripts, jewellery and of course the gilding of furniture and frames.

While you may think that it would be an over-the-top exhibition it is instead a totally absorbing and elegant look at the allure this precious metal casts upon the human psyche.
