HARRY BENSON: 50 YEARS BEHIND THE LENS, Mallett, Ely House, 37 Dover Street, London W1, 4th – 15th February.
This is a great celebration of the noted photojournalist Harry Benson CBE and his career. A man who has photographed every American President from Dwight D Eisenhower to the present incumbent, who caught on film both the building and coming down of the Berlin Wall and documented ‘Beatlemania’.
Among subjects he has caught on camera are Martin Luther King, Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson as well as capturing The Watts Riots in Los Angeles, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and events in many of the world’s conflict zones.
This selling exhibition concentrates on three categories – Beatlemania, Celebrity Icons and Reportage. Benson has written special memoir excerpts to accompany each image in the show.
Perhaps the best summing up of his talent should be left to Truman Capote:
“Harry, don’t tell Cartier-Bresson, or Penn, or Avedon, or Scavullo, or the sweet departed spirit of Sir Cecil Beaton, but YOU are my favourite photographer.”
