The 2017 20/21 British Art Fair

The 20/21 British Art Fair, Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1, 13th– 17th September 2017

Rose Hilton – Self Portrait with Model,
Oil on Canvas, 72 x 92 cm.

After a year’s absence – its old venue was no longer available – this popular Fair returns to central London. Its new venue is the Mall Galleries so very central indeed.

Ken Smith – Free Fall,
Hopton Wood Stone, 25 x 10 x 10 cm

The thirty-three leading dealers taking part bring a fine selection of works, especially Modern and Post War pieces. I have taken this opportunity to show some works from Messum’s who were founded in 1963 and specialise in paintings and sculpture.

century

Tribal Art London has certainly grown in the ten years it has been going and will have a record twenty-three exhibitors this time. On the 9th there is a day of events and lectures on the subject of tribal tattoos. The wide appeal of these pieces to all generations is highlighted in the nearby RA exhibition Matisse in the Studio (see 21/08/2017) where one can discover the African textiles, sculptures and masks which Matisse both collected and found as a source of inspiration. Get inspired yourselves – you won’t regret it.

Churches have many roles in today’s world as places of worship, concert venues, tourist attractions, even domestic dwellings or ruins.  This show brings a selection of these buildings to our attention and reminds us that John Betjeman summed it up so clearly in his poem “Churchyards” when he wrote “Our churches are our history shown / In wood and glass and iron and stone”.

On seeing this hugely enjoyable exhibition the viewer may well wonder why this is the first major celebration of Irish Art in London for over thirty years. The featured works are drawn from the collection of Allied Irish Bank and cover a wide range of media – paintings, photography, tapestry, sculptures and video.

The story of the last one hundred and twenty-five years of Irish Art examines the work of seventy of the country’s noted artists, including Sir John Lavery, Jack B. Yeats, Sean Scully, Caroline McCarthy and self-taught Shane Blount.

I totally agree with what, Richard Pym, the AIB Chairman, says “The AIB collection is regarded as one of the finest in Ireland, scrupulously put together over more than three decades. We are delighted that the public in Britain has this opportunity to see the depth of Ireland’s culture and heritage”.
