The Pillar Hall’s smart neo-classical inspired interior provides the backdrop for this exciting new fair. Organised by Thomas Del Mar, whose antique arms and armour auctions take place at nearby 25 Blythe Road, the fair has attracted forty dealers from the UK, USA and Europe. The pieces on view range from Bronze Age axes to First World War items.  So expect armour, firearms, pistols and swords as well as tribal weapons and a Mughal jade handled dagger.

It really promises to be a special event whatever your level of interest and collecting. The Arms and Armour Society and the Historical Breechloading Smallarms Association will also be attending.

The 2017 Summer Olympia Art & Antiques Fair

The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia, Olympia London, Hammersmith Road, London W14, 26th June – 2nd July 2017

Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill who will be speaking at The Art & Antiques Fair on ‘Incorporating Antiques in Design’ on Thursday 29 June at 12.30-13.30.

This is this fair’s forty-fifth year and as ever potentially offers much to its visitors. There is no doubt that change is inevitable and that emphasis and focus changes as one generation of collectors is succeeded by another. Styles of living change and what may have been our ideal does not necessarily resonate with our children and grandchildren.

It is therefore probably a sound idea to launch an Interior Design Talk Series at this year’s fair. The speakers include Henrietta Spencer Churchill, Douglas Mackie, Christopher Vane Percy, April Russel, Emma Burns from Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler, Susie Rumbold and Caroline de Cabarrus from Hotspur Design and the wide-ranging topics covered include Incorporating Antiques in Design and how to Decorate your House in a Day.

The fair’s director Mary Claire Boyd said, ‘We are excited about our new Interior Design Talk Series. There is a strong demand for advice from experts on how to incorporate art and antiques into interiors and previous designer talks have been very well attended. We are taking it to the next level this year by hosting top designers throughout the run of the fair.’ Perfect for inspiration to go out into the fair afterwards and buy!

It is also interesting to note that the number of picture dealers attending this year’s fair will be double that of last year’s. This increase is made up by new and some returning former exhibitors. The Chicago-based show, Sculptural Objects Functional Art and Design Fair (SOFA) who first showed three-dimensional contemporary art and design last year also returns.

It’s that time of year again and the Fair offers a wide-ranging selection of art and antiques for all tastes.  It is especially useful for those who seek ‘prestige’ items for their homes. One gallery always worth a close look is Lucy B. Campbell.

After starting her gallery concentrating on rare antiquarian prints in 1984 she gradually moved in the 1990s towards international and British contemporary artists and very successfully specialises in paintings, sculpture and photographs. From her ‘stable’ of British, American and European artists she is bringing a fine selection of works by Anna Pugh, Guillermo Muñoz Vera, Manuel López Herrera, Juan Luque, Carlos Morago and Marco Ramasso to this edition of the Fair.  By the way if you are looking for an artistic Christmas gift then you may find their Anna Pugh Jigsaw Puzzles fit the bill.

This Fair certainly has staying power as it is in its 44th year and continues to draw visitors in from home and abroad to see what the hundred and sixty participating dealers have to offer for their collections and homes.

The Fair’s Director, Mary Claire Boyd sums it up: “The Art & Antiques Fair, Olympia is London’s original, quintessential art and antiques fair. Over four decades since the event was founded, we continue to pride ourselves on offering a wider choice of high quality, vetted art, antiques, furniture and collectibles than any other event in the capital.”

The well-known SOFA CHICAGO – a Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design Fair (SOFA) will have a European version at this Fair as Mary Claire Boyd, explains“We are very excited to introduce SOFA LONDON as part of The Art & Antiques Fair, Olympia for the very first time this June. SOFA is widely known in the US for its international dealers selling one-of- a-kind masterpieces. Here in London we have an elite selection of dealers who will be showcasing original works from different artists and makers using a variety of mediums. For sale will be works of art including ceramics, metal work, photography, glass works, textiles, furniture and sculptures that appear more contemporary and cutting edge than other pieces in the fair, but yet will also stand the test of time. SOFA CHICAGO attracts over 35,000 people but for those who aren’t able to cross the pond to attend we’re delighted to offer this opportunity within the UK.”

According to recent research there is a resurgence in the demand for antiques and again I will share Mary Claire Boyd’s observations on this: “The world of antiques can be intimidating at first glance but this research shows that there is a real thirst for antiques. They are appreciated for the qualities they can bring to people’s homes– particularly amongst the younger generation who are frustrated with spending money on furnishings that only last a few years.

“While people see great benefits of purchasing antiques often they don’t realise the options and scope available to them – and the affordability.  Antiques are unique, often come with a fascinating story – and add individuality to your home.  They can also be combined very effectively with contemporary art and furniture.”

Although they are exhibiting at this year’s Olympia they are also holding this short show of European and British paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries which shows how painting evolved from the more academic traditions to Impressionism and onwards.  A nice hors d’oeuvres.

It certainly seems more sensible that the three summer fairs are now closer together and this summer the Olympia Fair has moved to the National Hall which hopefully will prove a better venue than the Grand Hall.

What one has come to expect and enjoy at this Fair is the wide variety of pieces on offer from all periods. There is a special treat this year as there is an exhibition of works from the Sinquefield Collection featuring works by American artists of the ‘dust bowl years’ which have been specially brought over from the States.

Among the lectures is Surprising Fabergé by Sarah Fabergé, the famous jeweller’s great-granddaughter. She will be joined by Patrick Mark whose new documentary Fabergé: A Life of Its Own can be seen in UK cinemas from June 29th. While in Victor Wynd’s Cabinet of Wonders the collector Viktor Wynd will be explaining his highly individual approach to collecting and looking at other similar collections.

It is quite appropriate that the global art fair Art15 should be sponsored by the international bank Citi Private Bank. This, its third edition, promises a good mixture of modern and contemporary art from over forty different countries. There are a series of curatorial and other projects plus a new monumental sculpture by Sokari Douglas Camp, the British, Nigerian-born, artist, who was short-listed in 2003 for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. This year’s fair will see the launch of the Global Private Museum Association, whose members will be international private museum owners.
